Education

A Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Maryland, I hold a B.A. in English with a minor in Communication. In addition to UMD, I have studied literature and linguistics at St. Catharine's College in Cambridge University, England.

Experience

I have four years of experience in tutoring college and high school students in English, Literary analysis, and writing. I have two years of experience teaching British Lit, American Lit, and Writing at the high school level. I remember hating reading in high school and being intimidated of the writing assignments that went along with it. It was a remarkable, young English teacher who transformed the way I experienced the subject. She made literature come alive to me, and once it became relatable, it became understandable. And then it actually became enjoyable! I was no longer intimidated by the books and long writing assignments because she gave me the inspiration and tools I needed to succeed, but most importantly to truly enjoy learning through reading, analyzing, and writing. That's what I now enjoy doing with students! My favorite part of tutoring is helping students connect with a subject matter to create an enjoyable and motivating experience to help them thrive. I am also passionate about helping students understand what makes for effective writing, rather than following the dry and outdated writing style of the "hamburger model" which puts students and teachers to sleep. While I don't "need" to tutor, I enjoy it so much that I am currently open to receiving clients.

Hobbies

I love cooking, kayaking, and watching White Collar. My husband and I love to hike and camp together when we're not watching the Eagles play. New to the LA area, I spent the last two years founding and directing a nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C. before moving to the West Coast. I love working towards a goal with vision and enthusiasm while accomplishing the right markers to achieve success. Nonprofit and teaching continue to be two of my biggest passions. I am currently reading "Thinking Fast and Slow" by Daniel Kahneman. While a little dense at times, it's a fascinating read on various studies which reveal the neuroscience behind our assumptions, biasses, reading verses social media, and other neuro performance.
